Catching Up

It's been a crazy couple of weeks. There's been a baby boom at work - there were 18 babies when I got there on Thursday, and we only have 12 post-partum rooms. But, it's been slow for awhile, so we all knew it was coming eventually.

It's been eventful at home too. I had my last RE appointment two Wednesdays ago, and then my first OB appointment this past Wednesday. I also saw the nutritionist since last week since I had failed my 3 hour GTT. I just started taking my blood sugars this past Wednesday, though. The RE didn't know what guidelines to give me, so I waited until I saw the OB. Plus, I needed a prescription for the testing supplies. So far, they've been OK, so I'm hoping they'll stay that way.

The OB appointment was pretty uneventful. The RE had done all of my initial labwork, so there were no blood draws. Though, they couldn't find either my chart, or the information from the RE, so I had to tell them everything. So, the OB basically just came in, told me what hospital they deliver at, what the risks of a twin pregnancy were, and listened to the heartbeats and we were done. It's so odd being a "normal" pregnant person now. I've gotten used to the weekly ultrasounds. Now, even with being pregnant with twins, they didn't want to see me again for 4 weeks! Well, actually, I'm going back in two weeks to go over my blood sugars, but if not for that, it would be a whole month before going back. It almost makes me want to get a doppler. Maybe I can just use one at work if I get nervous!

I am now officially 13 weeks. And I am starting to feel much better. The fatigue is easing a bit, and I've actually felt up to hanging out with other people a bit. I went yard-saling with my SIL last Saturday and made my first few baby purchases. Nothing major - mostly just some little things like blankets and burp clothes. A Penn State onsies. My SIL made out much better than I did. She only spent $20 and got a TON of toys for her little boy. I think his favorite, though was the set of plastic blocks she spent .50 on.

I also bought my first few maternity clothes on Wednesday. Though the experience was somewhat ruined thanks to some teenagers. I was in the dressing room trying on the pants I had picked out, and this group of 4 teenagers came in and the one girl was trying on clothes. They were loud and laughing and giggling, poking fun at the supposed father - telling him it was too late now. She was already pregnant. But, I really doubt that she was. We were talking to the saleswoman after they left, and she said they get kids in there all the time. They think it's funny to try on the clothing, and will try to tell the salespeople that their mom is pregnant, or some other excuse so they can try things on. Maybe it's just the hormones, but this was such a milestone for me. To actually bring myself to be able to walk into a maternity store and buy something and not feel like I was risking anything. And instead I got to hear this kids laughing and joking around about something I treasure so much.

I feel so blessed that I have made it to this point. The second trimester. I thought I'd never get here, and already the first trimester has flown by.

Failure

Things still look good with the little beans. I had another appointment this morning and they both have grown and are looking good. I did, however, fail my 3 hour glucose tolerance test.

I went for the test last Thursday. It was a rainy morning, so the lab was pretty slow. I was in the waiting room by myself for almost the whole three hours because everyone that came in could go right back. I was a little nervous about drinking the solution. Not so much because of nausea - it was actually pretty good that day. But, I just am not a fast drinker. I sip things, all the time. I rarely get through a 12oz soda over the course of dinner that takes and hour. So, when I had to drink 10oz in 5 minutes, I didn't think I could do it. The lab lady just said do the best I can. I took a straw with me, and got it down in about 10 minutes. It actually tasted pretty good. And I felt pretty good the whole time. Just a little head spinning whenever I stood up to do back to the lab room each time. The only time I felt bad was when I came home and tried to eat. I'm not sure if I just chose the wrong thing, if my stomach was rebelling because it had been empty so long, or if my sugar just crashed while I was eating. I just stopped eating and laid down a bit, and it passed. So, since I felt ok during the test, I was thinking that maybe I passed.

The results weren't too bad. My fasting and 3 hour glucose were well within the limits. But my 1 hour was 8 points over the limit, and the 2 hour was 6 or so over. So with too abnormal limits, I failed. I think the RE isn't quite sure what to do with the results, since they aren't used to dealing with this. They're sending me to a nutritionist, but when I asked if I was going to have to start checking my sugars, they just said they didn't know and the OB usually deals with it.

So for now, I'm just going to avoid excessive sweets - cakes, cookies, ice cream. The ice cream will be the hardest. One of my cravings has been chocolate chip ice cream, and we have a bunch sitting in our freezer.

I have just one more visit with the RE and then I graduate. It's hard to believe that will happen in a little over a week!

A little too sweet

I had another Monday morning appointment this morning. Everything still looks great. Measuring well, good heart rates. We could even see them moving a bit this morning!

So this afternoon, I looked at my cell phone and had a missed call from "restricted," which 99% of the time is my RE office. When I listened to the message, apparently I had some glucose in my urine when they dipped it today. So, I get to go do my 3hr GTT at some point soon, probably this week. It should be fun trying to do that while still having some nausea off and on, and not being able to eat anything, which is the biggest help for the nausea. I actually had this happen the first time I went to the RE, just for my initial consult. I think they just did a routine urine dip at the beginning of the appointment, and it came back with 3+ glucose. They had me drink some water while I was there and try again before I left. And even with being there 4 hours, it still came back positive. So the RE wouldn't let me leave until I had an appointment with my family doctor the next day. Nothing came of it, though. There was no sugar in my urine the next day, my fasting glucose was fine, and my HgbA1C was fine. So, hopefully I'll have the same result this time, and nothing will come of it!

Still Here

I didn't realize how long it's been since I last posted! Everything is still going well. Our last appointment last Monday, the babies were doing well, measuring 8w2d, and we were 8w3d. I think I haven't post just because I've been so exhausted. I barely move once I get home. But, it must be helping somehow, because the hematoma was just about gone on Monday as well. You could still see it a little bit, but they didn't even measure it. I have three more appointments with them, and I scheduled my first OB appointment for the first week in June.

I finally managed to call my dad this week and tell him. I was nervous doing it, that somehow something would go wrong then, but I called him Monday afternoon, and so far everything's been ok. I've been more tired this week then I have been, though the nausea has eased up at times. I'm still extremely grateful for the Zofran. I don't know how I would function without it. But even still, I haven't managed to gain any weight. I try to eat a lot, but just can't manage to for some reason.

This post is just all over the place. I have such conflicting feelings about today - Mother's Day. It's been a hard day the past couple of years. This year, I feel like it should be easier - I'm 9 weeks pregnant. But I'm still in that "danger" part of the pregnancy. I don't have a baby in my arms yet.

There's already been a lot of talk at work about what's going to happen when I'm out. I'm the only one who does my job, so there isn't really anyone to replace me, and I'm not quite sure what's going to happen. The main purpose of my job it to be at the hospital for c-sections during the day so the pediatricians don't have to leave their offices to come to them. They functioned for years without me, but now they don't know what they're going to do when I'm on leave. But, I don't even know how long my OB is going to let me work, since I haven't even seen them yet, so it's been hard to tell them anything definite. I'd love to work as long as I can, but I commute an hour each way, so I have a feeling at some point around 32-34 weeks (as long as everything has gone ok) they might want me to stay home. We'll have to see.

Heartbeats and Hematomas

We had another good appointment on Monday. They were able to see heartbeats on both our little peanuts, and then played them for us on the U/S machine. Both were measuring 6w1d, and I was 6w3d at the time, which is great. They did find a subchorionic hematoma behind baby B, so I'm thinking that's why I had some bleeding last week. It didn't seem too big, and I'm not on any restrictions, so they didn't seem too concerned about it. The doctor just told me to take it easy. So, I try to stay off my feet as much as I can at work - though days like today where we had 3 babies in 20 minutes it's not always easy. But, then I just rest when I get home. Like today when I fell asleep around 6:30 and took a nice two hour nap!

I still haven't told my dad he's going to be a grandpa again. I mean to call him every day, but just can't seem to bring myself to do it. We don't have the closest relationship - my parents divorced when I was 4. He's always been there, but he didn't know we were going through IVF. I haven't even talked to him since my birthday two months ago. Part of it, though, is I feel like telling him will finally make me admit to myself that I really am pregnant. Or that by telling him, I'm tempting fate and that something will go wrong after that. I told myself that I was going to wait until we saw heartbeats, which we did Monday. But now that there's this hematoma, I'm just scared to call him. It makes no sense.

Good News

I talked to the RE's office twice today. The first time they called, they said that my progesterone had dropped to 10, and they had no idea why. So, the nurse told me to throw away the bottle of PIO that I've been using, and to up the dose to 150mg a day. But, she said the RE was having them run the test again in case it was a lab error.

So, when she called back, she had good news. There was a lab error and my progesterone level was fine! I can even stay on the 100mg. She gave me the OK to go back to work tomorrow, but I was a little nervous about the bleeding starting again since I've been horizontal for 24 hours. So, I'm going to take one more day off and get up and move around a bit to make sure the bleeding doesn't come back. I know you can have bleeding, but it just makes me feel better to have that extra reassurance. And then I can go back to work for one day and have the weekend to take it easy in case anything starts up again. Now, I'm going to get back to the America's Next Top Model marathon. I really should find something more productive to do when I'm home resting :)

Ups and Downs

It's been an up and down week so far. Monday was my first post-positive beta ultrasound. I was really nervous about it, but things went really well. There were TWO perfect little gestational and yolk sacs. No heartbeats yet, but I was only 5weeks and 3 days. So, twins! I think DH is a little overwhelmed. He sent me a text message later in the day saying that if we wanted to talk about finding Lacey (our dog) a good home, we could. She's a little rambunctious, but nothing crazy. And by the time these babies are born, she'll be over two years old, so hopefully she'll have calmed down even more.

Yesterday was a little more of a down day. First of all, there was a wreck on the highway right by my house as I was leaving for work. So my normal one hour commute took me two hours. It took me 45 minutes to go 2 miles. The rest of the day was going ok - morning sickness lasted a little longer than usual, but it had finally eased up. I was standing up looking for something in my purse and all the sudden (TMI alert) I felt something leaking. I thought at first it was maybe just a little discharge, but then it kept going. So, I head to the bathroom and there is bright red blood flowing out. I had been having some more intense cramping for a little bit then I have had up to that point, but I thought that it was just a new symptom. Since it was more than just some spotting, and I had cramping with it, I called my RE. They had me leave work, come to the office to have some blood work drawn, and sent me home to rest.

So, today I'm still resting. Thankfully, the bleeding has stopped - just a little bit of brown blood this morning. I'm still waiting to hear from the RE to see what the blood work showed. They had me do an extra PIO shot when I got home yesterday too. So since today is my estrogen shot day, too, I'll have four shots in two days. It's a little sore in that area :) I'm not sure if they're going to let me go back to work or not yet, though I'm not in a hurry to go back. The bleeding was just so sudden. I hadn't been on my feet alot, I wasn't lifting anything. The only thing different about my day was the two hour drive. It was definitely scary seeing that bright red blood. I'm really hoping that doesn't happen again.
